Matt Hanson, Skye Moench Take IM North American Championships

Matt Hanson posted the fastest bike split, and a second-best marathon to finish in 7:56:48 with a 2:39 margin of victory over Andre Lopes of Brazil. Perhaps more impressive was Tim O’Donnell’s third place finish, 15 months after suffering a heart attack during the then Challenge (now CLASH Endurance) Miami. O’Donnell’s was a well-balanced performance – a race-best 48:54 swim, a second-best 4:12:12 bike split, and a 5th-fastest 3:01:04 marathon that totaled an 8:10:07 overall time.

Impressive in quite another fashion was Skye Moench’s dominating 8:51:44 time which brought her to the finish with a 20-minute 5-seconds margin over Jen Annett of Canada and 28:23 over third place finisher and fellow U.S. star Kelly Fillnow. Moench combined a women’s second-best 55:35 swim split, a women’s-best 4:41:35 bike split and a women’s fastest 3:06:20 marathon that added up to an 8:51:44 performance.

Men

O’Donnell led the men’s swim wave with a 48:54 split that gave him a 1 second margin over Jesper Svensson of Sweden, 1:37 over Andre Lopes of Brazil, and 2:49 over Hanson, Hanson took charge on the bike leg, with his race-best 4:09:58 split giving him a 24 seconds advantage over O’Donnell, 38 seconds over Svensson, 4:01 over Lopes and 15:54 over Matt Russell of the U.S.

Hanson finished with a men’s second-best 2:49:02 marathon that gave back 1:40 to Lopes (2:47:22 run split). Hanson finished in 7:56:48 with a 2:39 margin over Lopes, and 13:19 over third place finisher O’Donnell and 18:57 over 4th-place Luciano Taccone of Argentina.

Women

Britt Vocke of the U.S. led the women's swim with a 55:33 split that gave her a one second margin over Moench, 4 seconds over Lesley Smith of the U.S., 5:52 over Susie Cheetham of Great Britain, and 6 to 7 minutes over Canadians Jen Annett and Jenny Fletcher, as well as Linsey Corbin and Kelly Fillnow of the U.S.

Skye Moench took full charge on the bike on her way to a 4:41:35 split that gave her a 14:08 lead over Jen Annett, 17:08 over Fillnow, 17:16 over Lesley Smith, 17:44 over Cheetham, and 23:08 over Linsey Corbin.

After a women’s-fastest 3:06:20 marathon, Moench finished in 8:51:44 with a 20:05 margin over Annett, 28:23 over 3rd-place Fillnow, 31:09 over 4th place Cheetham and 32:48 over 5th place Corbin.
