Earlier this month, eagle-eyed members of our Reader Forum noticed that there were a fair number of changes to text in IRONMAN's rulebook for 2024. It led to a fierce discussion — namely, would these changes mean no more aero gains?

To get to the bottom of it, we invited IRONMAN's long-time chief official turned head of Special Projects Jimmy Riccitello to set us straight. We talked through how the rulebook came into existence, the relationship between IM and World Triathlon on rules, and a break down on the 2024 language. (Those hoping to create their own 3D printed parts may want to listen in.)

There are few things in triathlon that truly cause my jaw to drop anymore. They usually fall in a couple of different buckets; one is record speeds or times; another is incredible versatility. Athletes that fall into those buckets include, but are not limited to, Gustav Iden, Daniela Ryf, Kristian Blummenfelt, and Jan Frodeno these days.

But another is for creating an adventure and being able to tick that box off on your own. Create something that you have to sustain, and feed, and keep after it, day after day after day, with limited support. And the most prominent example of that spirit is Sean Conway. His most recent feat was, for 105 straight days, completing a full-distance triathlon within the cut-off windows that are most well associated with IRONMAN. He's recovering currently, and was able to join us for this week's episode of the Slowtwitch Podcast.
